Jeans often use two numbers: W for waist and L for inside-leg length. W32 L34 identifies a nominal 32-inch waist and 34-inch inside leg. Keep both numbers when you save a reference.

W32 L34 is one complete size
The first number describes the waist label; the second describes the inside leg. A 32-inch waist with a 30-inch leg is a different option from a 32-inch waist with a 34-inch leg. The same pair may be written 32/34 or 32 × 34.
A UK clothing size such as 12 is a different system. Do not turn it into a waist measurement unless the retailer supplies a chart for that garment. Short, regular and long labels also need that retailer’s definitions.
Check the rise and cut as well as the label
High-rise, mid-rise and low-rise jeans sit at different points on the body. Slim, straight, wide-leg and relaxed fits give different amounts of room through the hips and thighs. Stretch fabric can also change how a pair feels during wear.
A W32 label is not a promise that every part of the finished waistband measures exactly 32 inches. Use the retailer’s measurement instructions and product-specific guide.
Use a pair you already like
Record the brand, model, W size and L size from the label, then note how the waistband, thigh and length feel. If comparing garment measurements, lay the reference pair flat and follow the same measurement method the retailer uses.
Inside leg is measured along the inside seam from the crotch to the hem. Follow the retailer’s instructions for measuring your body; do not substitute your total height for inside-leg length.
