How to compare clothing sizes between brands

A size 10 in one brand is not automatically the same fit as a size 10 in another. Start with a garment you know, keep its context, and compare evidence for the item you want.

Record a real reference, not just a number

Choose an item you have worn and like the fit of. Save its brand, model or garment name, clothing category, sizing audience and the size system printed on its label. UK 10, US 10 and EU 10 are different labels, so the system matters.

Add whether it feels small, comfortable or large. Keep trousers, tops, dresses and shoes separate: fitting well in one category tells you little about another. A relaxed T-shirt is also a poor reference for a close-fitting jacket.

Compare measurements on the same basis

First check whether a chart describes body measurements or the finished garment. A garment normally allows room around the body; stretch and the intended fit affect that allowance. Do not directly compare a body chest measurement with a flat garment width.

Use the guide for the exact product where one is supplied. General brand charts can explain labels, but a particular model, cut, material or width may fit differently.

Read the recommendation, including its limits

In Mall Verse, “Your label” means the available label matches a saved size for a compatible category and audience. A comfortable reference from the same brand takes priority over a general category label. Missing size information is not a match.

Chart estimates are labelled separately and show the evidence used. Our initial chart comparison covers limited reviewed adult footwear rows. We do not apply a universal “one size up” rule between brands or invent a percentage chance of fit.

Use fit reports as supporting evidence

A useful report names the exact item, size system, width where relevant, and the item it is being compared with. A forum comment about a brand as a whole is much weaker evidence. Height alone does not tell us someone’s waist, chest, foot shape or preferred fit.

Mall Verse’s optional adult fit reports can support grouped comparisons when enough independent people report compatible items. They are observations rather than a guaranteed prediction. You can use My sizes without contributing any reports.

Before checking out

Check the retailer’s selected variant, size guide and returns information. If the chart and your known fit disagree, look for model-specific advice or ask the retailer. Keep the outcome in your size profile so your next comparison starts from better evidence.
